Company Mission

The Finance Innovation Lab works for a financial system that serves people and planet – one that’s democratic, responsible and fair. We incubate the ideas and people with the potential to transform the system, and we advocate for changes in the rules that shape the way finance works.

After five years leading the Lab’s work at the forefront of systems change in finance, our CEO Anna Laycock will be stepping down in 2020.

We’re a unique charity with a global reputation as a pioneer in systems change. Our work is driven by the belief that the dysfunctions of our financial system contribute to some of our most pressing social and environmental challenges, from fossil fuel extraction to unaffordable housing, but that it doesn’t have to be this way: people created the system and people can change it.

The Lab began as a collaboration between WWF-UK and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 2009, and became an independent charity in 2015. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved since independence, including:

Lab Fellowship, our flagship programme for financial innovators focused on social and environmental impact
Our groundbreaking report The Regulatory Compass, arguing that policymakers and regulators should put social purpose at the heart of their work
Our pioneering work supporting finance professionals to transform their organisations from the inside
Our growing community of changemakers in finance – innovators, intrapreneurs and influencers all working to build a better financial system
Our highly-regarded publication A Strategy for Systems Change, documenting the Lab’s journey from conception to independence.
This is a unique opportunity to lead a global pioneer in systems change. You’ll shape our vision and strategy for a financial system that serves people and planet, guiding our programmes and scaling our work to achieve maximum impact. Acting as a strategic partner to our COO, you’ll support the development and delivery of the Lab’s financial strategy and operational plans, and you’ll work with the COO, chair and vice-chairs to ensure we have a strong, engaged board.

You’ll lead our relationships with a wide range of influentials, harnessing our networks to develop powerful new initiatives and secure new sources of income for the Lab. You’ll build our reputation as a thought leader and maximise our brand profile with key audiences, and you’ll lead our relationships with key funders. As custodian of our methodologies and theory of change, you’ll ensure we’re responsive to change and we embed evaluation and learning throughout our work. You’ll lead and inspire our team to fulfil their potential, and support them to develop thought leadership around their work.

In all of your work and relationships, you’ll reflect the unique nature of the Lab’s approach to financial systems change and you’ll act in line with our values of collaboration, action learning and empowerment.

The role involves frequent travel, both in the UK and internationally, and you’ll need to attend events in the evening and at weekends (for which time off in lieu can be claimed). You’ll be based in our modern offices in Farringdon, with flexible working hours and scope for remote or home working some of the time. We also welcome applications from candidates wishing to job share, either individually or in a pair.
